Origami Lovebirds – The Perfect Gift

IMG_20160403_1811169_rewind

Throwback to the days when I would always make these birdies. While thinking of crafts to make for Mother’s Day I was reminded of this pair of beautiful birds that I made over three years ago for my grandmother. The story behind this piece goes like this: My grandma went to a wedding and won a pair of origami bird that they were using as a centerpiece. I visited her one day and told her that they were ugly (:D) and that I could make them better. So she told me to make them for her! It was around Valentine’s then, so I figured I would use those colors as my theme (red, pink, and white). I got the white flower, pink glass flower, and heart tray at the dollar store. If I remembered correctly I cut the “Be Mine” sign out of a card. Probably from the dollar store too. I bought the color papers from the craft store. My supplies were not that expensive. I brought the finished birds to her and she loved them! The next week I visited her and noticed that the pair she had won was missing. I asked her where it was and she said she gave it away because mine was prettier. 🙂 I’m glad she appreciated my work.

You guys are probably wondering how in the world I made this. Well let me tell you, it took me at least three years to perfect it. The technique is called block folding origami. Origami is the process of folding papers into 3D objects. Block folding also consist of folding papers, but you have to assemble those papers into a 3D object. I made these two birds by individually folding over 500 pieces of paper and then assemble them pieces by pieces. To achieve this small size bird my papers are cut into 1 in x 1.5 in piece. If I want a bigger size bird then I would just increase the dimensions of the paper. I usually cut about 1000 pieces in my desired colors and fold them all before I put the bird together. It only takes me about two hours to put each bird together but hours to fold the tiny pieces of paper! I make the body first, then the feet, and then the tails. I put the head on last because it is the most fragile part of the bird. Once they’re done then I just arrange them however I like, like the one pictured above, with super glue.

I used to make so many and give them away as gift. Now a day, I only make them at someone’s request. It is somewhat time consuming. However, it always make me happy to make them. I know they will come out beautiful and people loves them.

If you know how to make block folding origami I would love to hear from you. It is so hard to find ideas on the web! Thanks for coming by and please share!

Flat-belly Detox Water Challenge

IMG_20160421_1815471_rewind_kindlephoto-922422285

Let’s face it ladies, who doesn’t want a flat, sexy stomach? I’ve been trying to lose my “fat” tummy since I gave birth to my son. That was 15 months ago! I’ve done some workout videos, on and off, but I can never stay motivated to get far enough with the programs to see any results. It’s just so hard!

I’ve seen a lot of posts lately about drinking detox water, and how it’s supposed to help cleanse your system and make you healthier. Some even claims to help you lose weight! Doesn’t it sound too good to be true? That you can lose weight by drinking “detox” water? After doing some readings I found that the recipe I’m about to write about is the most popular among them all. This “delicious” water is going to help shed those stubborn  belly fats, giving you a flatter tummy.

To test out this theory a few coworkers of mine and I are going to do a 14-days challenge. For the next two weeks, starting this Sunday, we will be conducting two separate experiments.I will be drinking three bottles of detox water a day, one before breakfast, one before lunch, and one before dinner. My friends will be drinking a gallon of the water per day. This will help us to determine which method works best.

We will weigh ourselves before we start the challenge, and after we’ve completed the challenge, so that we can compare results and share it with you guys. Of course we will also provide inputs on the before and after conditions of our tummy. 🙂

You’ll need these basic ingredients: fresh lemons, fresh ginger, spearmint leaves, honey, cucumbers, and water bottles

To prepare this drink all you have to do is squeeze half a lemon into a bottle of water, add a few thin slices of ginger, add a few spearmint leaves, add one tablespoon of honey, and a few thin slices of cucumber.

Prepare this drink at night and leave it in the refrigerator to get cold overnight. In the morning drink it 15 or 20 minutes before eating breakfast. Repeat this process if you’re doing the three bottles challenge. If you’re doing the one gallon change then drink it throughout the day at your own pace.

It’s that simple! We challenge all of you out there to try out this recipe. Share your thoughts and results with us below. Don’t forget to mention which method you decided to use. We will be back in two weeks with our update. Have fun and drink detox water!

P.S. Don’t expect much results if you continue to consume massive amount of fast food everyday. This drink is not a miracle. You have to make a commitment in order to get good results.

Pan-fried Steak With Chinese Broccoli

IMG_20160421_1745123_rewind (2016-04-21T23_31_50.559)

MMMMMMMmmmm dinner time! My friend, and co-author of this blog, Josephine, has been cooking and posting recipes, so I think that it’s only fair if I do too. 🙂

Yesterday my sister dragged me grocery shopping with her and I found an awesome buy one get one free deal on steak. I bought two, of course, and decided to make them for dinner today. This is a very simple pan-fried steak recipe with sautéed Chinese broccoli as a side dish. Here’s what you fill need:

  • 1 piece of steak (any size piece that you want)
  • 1 bundle of Chinese broccoli (I got mine at an oriental store)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt and pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • t teaspoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder (or 3 cloves of fresh garlic if you have them)
  • 2-3 tablespoon of Worchester sauce
  • 1 large fresh onion
  • 2 tablespoon of cooking oil (any brand)
  • 1 tablespoon of butter (any brand)

You can add or subtract the ingredients to adjust to your taste bud. You can also reverse the amount of cooking oil and butter if you prefer one more over the other. Here’s what you do:

  • Season the steak with salt, pepper, paprika, onion and garlic powder, and Worchester sauce. Rub it thoroughly  to make sure you cover both side of the steak well. Let the steak marinate over night so that it can absorb more of the flavors. However, it is not necessary.
  • Chop the whole onion and set it aside.
  • Cut up the Chinese broccoli and set it aside as well
  • Have the stove on low to medium heat and add the oil. Once the oil is hot enough then add half of the chopped onion first. Let the onion cook for about three minutes before adding the steak

IMG_20160421_1719070_rewindIMG_20160421_1733244_rewind

Let the steak cook for about 5 minutes on each side. I let mine cooked for 10 minutes because I don’t like it rare. Just adjust the time depending on how rare you like your steak.

  • After the steak has cooked to your liking, add the butter to the pan. Adding the butter now will allow more juice to be available for use later. It also gives the steak a little bit more flavoring.
  • Continue to cook the steak until it is cooked to your liking. Then remove the steak and set it aside.

IMG_20160421_1736040_rewind

You will have this goodness left in the pan for the next part of the recipe, the side dish.

  • Now throw in the broccoli and remaining chopped onions. You will sauté them in the juice left over from the steak. This is all the flavoring that you will need!
  • Sauté the ingredients for about five minutes, or until the leaves reach a dark green color

IMG_20160421_1739123_rewind

Sorry my picture here is a little dark. When the broccoli starts to turn a darker green color then it is time for you to turn off the stove.

Time to eat! Lay the greeneries on your plate first, then slice the steak into thin pieces and place them on top of the broccoli. Your dinner is ready! Enjoy! 🙂

Let us know how your Pan-fried Steak with Chinese Broccoli turn out!

  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup oil

  • Place yuca in a large pot and fill with enough water to cover the yuca
